The Great Tiki God Ku welcomes you to the Tiki Page!
Why Tiki? Why Not! Tiki is fun and interesting. Tiki
combines the exotic with great times (and often great drinks)
I have always had a mild fascination with tiki and Polynesiana since I was a
kid and saw the Brady Bunch
get it handed to them by the curse of the tiki idol (sad, but true). A visit
to Walt Disney World's refurbished
Enchanted Tiki Room many years later interested me again.

About a
year ago, a wonderful comic named Hawaiian Dick, a detective noir tale set
in 1950's Hawaii and involving zombies and revived tribal warriors really got me interested. Since then I've devoured everything tiki I could find. Then I found Sven Kristen's absolutely wonderful book on Tiki culture. Also being fond of retro-pop culture, I became even more enthralled with tiki as a predominant theme in bars and lounges in the 1960's. Today, tiki and Polynesiana seems to be making something of a revival (and just in time!) |
A brief explanation of tikis: Tiki idols
represent various gods, sometimes in the same diety in different
aspects. Tikis typically have big, wide, open mouths to scare away evil spirits.
The big guy you see above, Ku,
was a warrior god and in this aspect is a protector. In other aspects, he could
be even more ferocious.
Ku here was made by the Tikimaster in Hawaii and is a great piece of art which
now hangs over my
bed warding off bad dreams and more sinister evils.

| The book that really started it all for me. The first story arc is collected in "The Byrd of Paradise" TPB (available at any major bookstore). In the next month or so, the new story arc "The Last Resort" will begin. (available in your local comic shop). This is one of the best comic books published today. | ![]() |
